In this essay I will be analysing the star, Britney spears and how her image has changed through time. Britney spears aged 27 started her career at the very young age of 12 when she starred in Disney Channel's television series The New Mickey Mouse Club. In 1997, Britney signed a recording contract with Jive, which led to her release to her debut album, Baby One More Time in 1999. The album debuted at number one and established her as a pop icon. Being a role model for girl teens and was liked by boys because of her innocent sex appeal. Britney’s early image was a naive young girl making her way into the music world. Her first single released was “hit me baby one more time” in which in her video she was dress as an innocent school girl. Britney went on with the ‘innocent’ factor which was clever as young girls could relate to her and young lads found her appealing. As Britney grew older her image began to change from being an innocent young girl to a sexy young lady. In all her videos she plays herself, performing the song. There aren’t many visual motifs as Britney has changed drastically throughout her whole career. At first, Britney’s record company attempted to sell the star through her ‘cute’ and 'innocent' factor. However through time Britney began to not cope with the fame and her role as a teen icon. She had started her career at a very young age and this all had an effect of her as she grew older. She became stressed and made a lot of bad decisions. Therefore her image change and when she got her life back on track she changed to a sexy mysterious woman. In her videos the whole attire is set to fit her image. The props, hairstyle, costume, setting etc suits Britney’s image, whatever that image may be at that point of her career. Britney became very popular, very quick. She was loved by everyone for her pure and sweetness. She wrote songs that young teens could relate to and had an image that young boys could admire. She was unstoppable and had found her place in the music world as a young teen icon. There wasn’t much competition for the star when she first came onto the scene which could be another factor of why she became so popular. To conclude, Britney’s image may have changed throughout the years, caused by many different factors. However she still remains the Britney that we loved when she first started and still comes back fighting strong no matter what problems she faces. Her look is very different and her music may have changed from girly pop to pop with an edge of dance but she is still the same Britney.
